Jules from Harlem finally shows up

hodge.jpg

This picture was taken just after NC State beat UConn on a Julius Hodge drive and free throw. Hodge has played for State for four years, and has yapped on and on about how wonderful a player he is. Finally, in potentially his last game as a member of the team, he put his money where his mouth is, and came through.

BTW, this is the Chi Psi house on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.

Comets win 2005 City Championship

comets_2005.jpg

The Comets concluded an amazing year by winning the Raleigh Senior Girls City Championship, defeating the Storm 36-32. We started off way too tight, and the Storm played very loose. About half way through the second quarter, they led 18-7, and I was starting to get worried. We had missed several easy point-blank shots that we normally don't miss, but still, we're down 11. But a 5-0 run to end the half put the score at a slightly more comfortable 18-12 deficit.

But the Storm scored the first two baskets of the second half, and for the first time in the game, I thought we might blow it. But then began a frantic run, fueled by our full-court press, that ran off a 13-2 run to take a 1 point lead just seconds before the end of the third quarter. Our press had not been very effective against the Storm all season (we had much better luck pressing the Sting), but in the game that counted the most, the kids stepped up their intensity to a level they had not played at all season, and came through.

The fourth quarter played out like every other fourth quarter this year, we scored a few more points than our opponent (3) to finally win the game.

This was a pretty satifying win, since this is only my second year as head coach, and since last year we were SO BAD!!! I feel like I'm getting the hang of being in charge, and I didn't let my intensity or emotions get too carried away during the game. All in all, a pretty satisfying season.....
